Early Turner Oil Painting Sells for 7X Its Estimate After 150 Years Hidden | Sotheby's

Unseen for more than 150 years and recently rediscovered, J.M.W. Turner’s earliest known oil painting returned to the public eye tonight at #SothebysLondon, soaring to over six times its estimate to £1.9 million.

Watch Harry Dalmeny bring the hammer down during a standout moment at #SothebysLondon, bringing tonight’s sale total to £14.5 million.

Painted when he was just 17, ‘The Rising Squall’ is a bold, atmospheric work that hinted at the genius to come. Offered at auction for the very first time, this rare Turner was a highlight of our celebration marking 250 years since the artist’s birth.

Masters Week continues tomorrow, 3 July, at 11:00 AM BST with the Old Master & 19th Century Paintings and Works on Paper Day Auction.
