Funeral of Pope Francis at the Vatican

Around 150,000 people lined the streets of Rome on April 26 to watch as the pope’s coffin was driven past on its way to his final resting place. World leaders attended the funeral.

The funeral of Pope Francis, who died on Monday aged 88, was held in St Peter’s Square in the Vatican but he will be buried in Rome’s Santa Maria Maggiore basilica.

The Argentine pontiff, 88, died on Monday (April 21, 2025) after a stroke, less than a month after returning home from five weeks in hospital battling double pneumonia.
