🐘Elephant Allomothers

❓ Did you know that not only the elephant mothers take care of their calves?

🐘 Adolescent female relatives of calves play an important role in a their development. These females are known as allomothers and provide comfort, protection and socialization for young calves.

🐘 Allomothers provide an enormous benefit for calves, increasing the chances of the calves survival. A calf born to a young and inexperienced mother also tends to receive more care from allomothers.

In this video we can see the collared cow, Summer, accompanied by the calf of another family member. Summer is highly pregnant and we can't wait to see her moving with her own calf in the coming months!
