Manuscript Ponzi fraud and conviction #shorts #ponzi #fraud

Gérard Lhéritier’s manuscript investment scheme promised investors partial ownership in rare documents linked to figures like Balzac, Proust, and Einstein, marketed as a prestige alternative asset with projected returns of 40% over five years. Nearly 20,000 people bought into the story, helping drive a fraud worth close to €1 billion in France.

The scheme worked by using money from new investors to pay earlier ones while Lhéritier financed a lavish lifestyle of yachts, private jets, and luxury real estate. Even after reportedly winning €170 million in the lottery, the underlying business model remained unsustainable, and he was ultimately convicted of fraud.

The broader takeaway is about the risk of illiquid, hard-to-value assets being packaged with unrealistic return promises. The case shows how status, exclusivity, and cultural prestige can be used to manufacture trust around a classic Ponzi structure.
