As the conflict in the Middle East continues to escalate, the Indian Ocean is being drawn into a chain reaction of shocks. Persistent disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have forced large-scale rerouting of vessels, driving shipping costs and insurance premiums higher and higher. For Sri Lanka, which has been painstakingly rebuilding from the ruins of its 2022 national bankruptcy, this distant warfare amounts to nothing less than a new test of survival.

Sri Lanka relies on imports for approximately 63% of its energy and a staggering 90% to 100% of its fertilizer needs, meaning every fluctuation in the Middle East translates directly into a heavy burden for its domestic population. A surge in global oil prices has already triggered a 33% to 40% spike in domestic fuel prices, driving up overall inflation and, consequently, pushing transport and electricity costs higher. At the same time, around 80% of Sri Lanka's foreign exchange remittances come from its migrant workforce in the Gulf region; any regional instability threatens to choke this vital financial lifeline. Tourism has also taken a hit, with reduced aviation capacity in early 2026 already leading to a drop in visitor arrivals. Caught in a fragile recovery period barely sustained by an IMF bailout framework, Sri Lanka is being forced to endure the dual blows of internal hardship and external pressure.
