Epilepsy is a complex neurological disorder that affects 1 percent to 2 percent of children worldwide. As an accredited level 4 epilepsy center, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is recognized by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers as having the expertise and facilities to provide the highest-level medical and surgical evaluation and treatment for children with epilepsy.
Our interdisciplinary team of pediatric epilepsy specialists are experts in the entire range of epilepsy management from initial diagnosis and testing to the most complex and technologically advanced epilepsy surgery. Using a multidisciplinary approach and state-of-the-art technology, we provide individually tailored epilepsy treatment options for children suffering from seizures. Our goal is to achieve full seizure control while minimizing risk and discomfort and maximizing each child’s quality of life.
We partner with physicians around the world to provide exceptional care for children with epilepsy, using a telemedicine approach that augments local resources while also providing remote interpretation of testing and the opportunity for advanced care at CHOP when necessary.
At Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, your child’s care begins with a comprehensive assessment of their medical history, seizure types and the cause of their epilepsy. This evaluation includes diagnostic tests such as electroencephalography (EEG), high resolution brain MRI, functional MRI, magnetoencephalography (MEG), and genetic studies, as well as minimally invasive diagnostic approaches like robotic-assisted stereotactic EEG (sEEG).
We create a personalized seizure treatment plan that typically includes medical management with seizure medication. For children who continue to have seizures despite medical management, we offer additional strategies including epilepsy surgery, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), vagus nerve stimulation and the ketogenic diet.
