From the Vault: U.S. Army .30-40 Krag
Before the M1903 Springfield, even before the Lee Navy Model of 1895, there was the Springfield Model 1892-99, better known as the .30-40 Krag, the U.S. military's first bolt action rifle. Derived from the Danish Krag-Jørgensen rifle, the American Krag was chambered in the U.S. military's first smokeless powder cartridge, the .30-40 Krag. Roy Hill tells us about his personal Krag, which is still in its original military configuration, never having been "sporterized." Roy demonstrates the rifle's features: a smooth, easy-operating bolt, a unique side-loading internal magazine, a rear sight graduated out to 2,000 yards (!), and a magazine cutoff lever for operating as a single-shot.
