"The Man Who Sold The World" is an original song by David Bowie from his 1970 album of the same name. This LP was on Kurt's list of 50 best albums.

Nirvana covered the song during their "MTV Unplugged" show in autumn 1993, and the song was also released as a promotional single for the live album in 1995. For the performance, Kurt had run his acoustic guitar through a fuzz box that he could trigger with a pedal. He switched back and forth between the strumming acoustic sound and the electric dark sounds of his guitar on the song’s lead licks.

After "Unplugged", Nirvana performed "The Man Who Sold The World" during their normal electric shows. The song was played at the final Nirvana concert, March 1, 1994, Munich.

Bowie said of Nirvana's cover: "I was simply blown away when I found that Kurt Cobain liked my work, and have always wanted to talk to him about his reasons for covering 'The Man Who Sold the World'" and that "it was a good straight forward rendition and sounded somehow very honest. It would have been nice to have worked with him, but just talking with him would have been real cool." Bowie called Nirvana's cover "heartfelt", noting that "until this, it hadn't occurred to me that I was part of America's musical landscape. I always felt my weight in Europe, but not in the US. In the wake of its release, Bowie bemoaned the fact that when he performed the number himself, he would encounter "kids that come up afterwards and say, 'It's cool you're doing a Nirvana song.' And I think, 'Fuck you, you little tosser!'

Lyrics:

We passed upon the stair, we spoke of was and when
Although I wasn't there, he said I was his friend
Which came as such surprise I spoke into his eyes
I thought you died alone, a long long time ago

Oh no, not me
We never lost control
You're face to face
With The Man Who Sold The World

I laughed and shook his hand, and made my way back home
I searched for form and land, for years and years I roamed
I gazed a gazley stare, we walked a million hills
I must have died along, a long long time ago

Who knows? not me
I never lost control
You're face to face
With the Man who Sold the World

Who knows? not me
We never lost control
You're face to face
With The Man Who Sold The World
