The DOOMED Development of Marc Eckō’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure - A Graffiti Cult Classic

It’s the 25th of February 2006. A cold Saturday afternoon.

I’m in the back of my Dad’s car with a growing sense of disappointment. We’ve been to three video game stores already with no success, and everywhere will be closing up soon.

I know, I know. First world problems.

But there’s one place left to try; a DVD rental store that sometimes has video games for sale. It’s a long shot, but my Dad is willing to make the trip, so off we go.

An hour later, I’m sitting at home, holding it in my hands. A freshly sealed copy of Marc Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure for the original Xbox.

I was 15 years old, crazy about graffiti and street art, and I felt like this game was made just for me. I had devoured every magazine preview I could get my grubby hands on, and I was desperate to buy a copy.

My fondest memories of my Dad are when he went out of his way on his rare days off to show support for my love of art. He couldn’t have enjoyed playing taxi driver all day, but nothing was more important to me at the time, and he didn’t let me down.

The game itself is a cult classic. It didn’t spawn a franchise, or even a sequel for that matter. But to this day, it remains one of my all time favourites.

So 15 years later. Literally a lifetime since I first bought it. I wanted to look at the history of how it came to be, and explore why it was deemed a failure.

And I’m glad I did. The story of Marc Ecko’s Getting Up is fascinating - a tale of bankruptcy, bans, domestic terrorism charges and a scrappy legal battle with the Mayor of New York City.

If you search for the title of the game on places like Twitter and Reddit, you’ll find small pockets of people like me who are keen for a sequel.

With each year that passes, the hope dims. The game came out half a lifetime ago for me, but I would love to see a modern day take on the concept.

While the game itself hasn’t aged particularly well, with clunky mechanics, and slightly repetitive levels, it still takes me back to that 15 year old kid furiously copying the designs into my sketchbook.
