This Coke Machine Was Online Before the Web #techexplained #iot #internetofthings

The Internet of Things (IoT) started in 1982, when students at Carnegie Mellon put a Coke machine online so they could check from their desks whether it was stocked and cold.
That is all a smart device does: it notices something and tells you over the internet. It needs three things: a sensor, a tiny chip and a connection.
From one vending machine to 21 billion connected things:
1982: Carnegie Mellon's Coke machine goes on the ARPANET
1990: John Romkey switches on a toaster over the internet
1991: Cambridge's Trojan Room coffee pot gets a camera, later the first webcam
1999: Kevin Ashton coins the name "Internet of Things"
2000: LG launches one of the first internet-connected fridges
Today: smart speakers, thermostats, watches, doorbells and farm sensors
Figure: IoT Analytics, State of IoT 2025 (21.1 billion connected IoT devices).
