In Conversation with History Holders of the American Dance Therapy Association: Iris Rifkin-Gainer

In this series of 15 videos, Dr. Jacelyn Biondo is joined in conversation by 16 first-generation dance therapists who have studied directly with the foundational practitioners and theorists of the professional field of dance therapy. In each conversation, these women share their stories and wisdom in their own words, passing their knowledge on to future generations. This archival video series was made possible by funding from the Marian Chace Foundation.

Iris Rifkin-Gainer, MA, BC-DMT studied and worked with Dance Therapist Blanche Evan from 1947 to 1982, experiencing the development in Evan’s work from Creative Dance to Dance
Therapy with the Normal Neurotic Adult. She taught in the Graduate Dance Therapy Program of N.Y.U.’s Department of Dance and Dance education from 1970 to 1985, working under Dr.
Marcia B. Leventhal from 1973 to 1985. Rifkin-Gainer has taught Dance Therapy workshops,
classes, and courses at Smith College, Naropa Institute, Bucknell University, and the Dance
Movement Therapy Association of Great Britain. As a guest of Dr. Leventhal, she presented
Evan’s work in the Diploma of Dance Movement Therapy Program at Froebel College,
Roehampton Institute, London. Rifkin-Gainer is on the faculty of Kinections Institute in
Rochester, N.Y. where the course on Blanche Evan Methods is offered as part of the ADTA
Accredited Alternate-Route Dance Movement Therapy Program. Her writing has appeared in
the American Journal of Dance Therapy; Theoretical Approaches in Dance-Movement Therapy, Vol II edited by Penny Lewis Bernstein, and Works by and About Blanche Evan, edited by Ruth Benov.
