This version of the side part haircut is very similar to Henry Cavill’s hair in the recent Superman movie. Thick wavy hair can be challenging to cut because it is not easy to pick up with your fingers. So in this case we will be using the barber shear over comb technique to cut the top. Also, we will start from the back because the hair is growing to the side and slightly back so it will be much easier for the comb to pick it up whereas if we started in the front it would just push the hair. Start by over directing from the crown to leave the hair slightly longer so it won’t stand up. Cut on an even plane parallel to the floor to the front. Do not round the comb down in the front as this will leave the hair shorter. We want the hair longer in the front also so there is enough to style. Repeat the previous steps with the thinning shear over comb technique. This will give the hair texture and will look great when styled.

Next, remove the weight in the parietal area with the scissor over comb or clipper over comb technique. For this haircut we chose to stay with the barber shears. Take a good amount of bulk out and blend into the top. This will also create a guide for going in with the clippers on the side for the fading or tapering. After removing the bulk repeat the same step with the thinning shear over comb technique to add texture to match the top. Move on to the tapering or fading portion of the haircut using a detachable clipper similar to the oster classic 76, Andis BGRC, Andis MVP, Oster Octane, Andis Supra ZR with a 3 ¾ metal blade. This will cut the hair to a half inch. Because the hair is so thick no skin will show through. This is also the equivalent of a number four plastic clipper guard. Start at the bottom and run the clipper straight up the side of the head cutting to the guide but not into the guide. This will help you avoid unnecessary blending.

Next, use an adjustable clipper such as the Andis Envy, Andis Master, Wahl Designer, Wahl Senior, or Oster fast feed in the longest blade setting and use a scooping motion around the outline of the haircut to fade out. Repeat this step with lever adjusted halfway and then the shortest setting scooping the clipper a little bit lower each time to finish the taper. Last, use a t-outliner or trimmer to finish the haircut. Line off the sideburns and the diagonal line behind the ears without cutting into the natural hairline. On the back of the neck use an upward shaving motion without getting too close to the tapered or faded hairline. Complete the haircut by styling with the medium hold, medium shine grooming cream from Zorian of New York.
