Explaining AI to a skeptical CFO is a lot easier when you don’t lead with the tool. Most finance pros make the same mistake: they open with “I’ve been using ChatGPT” and watch the conversation go sideways from there.

The approach that actually works is starting with what changed — “I cut two hours off my monthly reporting process” — and letting them ask how. Once they ask, you’re having a completely different conversation. They came to you, which means they’re already interested.

From there, use data points, not claims. “AI can automate a lot” means nothing. “AI reduced my commentary time from two hours to two minutes” lands differently. Finance people know what to do with a number.
