Is the 2018 Nissan Leaf the Best EV Out There? | Model Review

The Nissan Leaf was the first "real" mass-produced electric car, and Nissan has followed up with a new Leaf with more range, more technology and more performance. Edmunds Road Test Engineer Calvin Kim gives you the rundown on the updates and what makes the Leaf relevant today.

Q: How far can the 2018 Nissan Leaf go on a charge?
A: Nissan says the Leaf can go 151 miles on a charge, and we were able to get close to that without much effort, so long as you're in e-Pedal mode to maximize brake regeneration. Combining e-Pedal with Eco mode, it should be able to exceed that with just a little bit of careful driving.

Q: How fast is the 2018 Nissan Leaf?
A: During our own testing, we accelerated the Leaf from 0 to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds. It then went on to complete the quarter-mile in 15.9 seconds, with a trap speed of 86.3 mph.

Q: How much is the Leaf in the video?
A: The test vehicle is a 2018 Nissan Leaf SL, which starts at $37,085. The grand total is $38,320 and includes the Scarlet Ember exterior color, black leather interior, the Technology package, and carpeted floor mats. Of course, that doesn't include the $7,500 federal tax credit and any local tax credits that are available for this full-electric car.

Q: What kind of battery and motor does the 2018 Nissan Leaf have?
A: It comes with a 40-kWh lithium-ion battery and a 110-kW AC synchronous electric motor that puts out 147 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque.
