Helen Cornelius is an American country singer and songwriter best known for her successful duets with Jim Ed Brown during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Born on December 6, 1941, in Hannibal, Missouri, she began her career performing in local bands and writing songs before signing with RCA Records in the mid-1970s. Her breakout came in 1976 when she teamed with Jim Ed Brown to record “I Don’t Want to Have to Marry You,” which became a No. 1 country hit and one of the most popular duets of the era. Their harmony-driven partnership produced several more charting singles, including “Saying Hello, Saying I Love You, Saying Goodbye,” “Lying in Love with You,” and “If the World Ran Out of Love Tonight.”

Cornelius also pursued a solo career, scoring hits such as “What Am I Living For” and “Love Is a Four-Letter Word.” Known for her smooth, expressive voice and elegant stage presence, she remained a regular on the Grand Ole Opry and in country touring circuits. Helen Cornelius is fondly remembered as one of the key female voices in country’s romantic duet era, leaving a lasting mark with her blend of grace, emotion, and vocal warmth.
