Greetings from holidays, my friends!
In this short video I would like to share with you a tip, how to take a long exposure photo if you don't have your tripod with you, and you really want or need to capture a long exposure pictures for social media.
I will explain later, why for social media and not for printing as well.
Taking long exposure photos with the iPhone is a straightforward process, thanks to the advanced camera capabilities and software features. I have the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but the ability to convert Live Photos to long exposure should be available on any iPhone model that run iOS 11 or later.
LONG EXPOSURE EFFECT AND FACTORS AFFECTING QUALITY:
A Live Photo captures 1.5 seconds of footage before and after the shutter is pressed, resulting in a total of 3 seconds of video.
When you convert a Live Photo to a long exposure, the iPhone blends the multiple frames of the video clip to create the effect.
And if you don't use a tripod, there might be some motion that can affect the final quality of the long exposure photo.
To create a smooth long exposure effect, the iPhone uses image stabilization techniques that can involve cropping the image slightly. This cropping helps align the frames and remove any jitter, or movement artifacts, leading to a slightly smaller final image.
The process of blending multiple frames to simulate long exposure can also introduce some softness or loss of details. This is because iPhone is averaging these frames to create the long exposure effect.
So, keeping the phone extremely steady while capturing the Live Photo (and it means 1.5 sec. before and 1.5 sec. after you pressed the shutter) can minimize the need for cropping and stabilization adjustments, preserving more of the original resolution.
Also good lighting conditions can reduce noise and improve the clarity of each frame in the Live Photo, leading to a higher quality long exposure.
Reducing the amount of movement in the scene can help produce a sharper long exposure image since there will be less need for aggressive frame blending.
The pictures in this short video were taken in a very busy environment where every second some tourist jumped in front of me and also I didn't have a tripod with me.
But, if you can, find the moment, when you can be undisturbed and concentrate on the composition and steadiness, and use a tripod to eliminate any motion while taking Live photo. It'd not necessary, but highly recommended.
Also, the length of the exposure in the built in app of the iPhone is fixed. So, if we would like to do 10, 15 or more seconds, we can't use Live Photos for that. Because only option with Live Photos is a three seconds long exposure.
So, for more advanced photography consider to use a third-party apps.
