South Africa: Zulu procession accompanies vehicle carrying body of Queen Mantfombi in Johannesburg

Mourners of South Africa's Zulu queen, Queen Mantfombi, accompanied a delegation of cars repatriating her remains in Johannesburg on Wednesday, ahead of her burial.

Amabutho (Zulu regiments) and amatshitshi (Zulu maidens), as well as mourners, assembled to accompany the vehicle transporting her remains, which will be taken to the royal palace in Nongoma.

Just one month after becoming regent, Queen Mantfombi died on April 29, 65. She became interim leader to the country's largest ethnic group once her husband, King Goodwill Zwelithini passed away on March 12.

Local sources state that a possible turbulent succession battle could initiate among family members after her death.

The queen is due to be buried at the crack of dawn on Thursday.
