Christopher Reeve was 42 years old and at the peak of his career when, on May 27, 1995, he was thrown headfirst from a horse during an equestrian event in Virginia.

He shattered his top two vertebrae. He woke up in a hospital paralyzed from the neck down and unable to breathe without a ventilator.

The man the world knew as Superman could no longer move a single finger.

He could have hidden. Instead, he founded the Christopher Reeve Foundation, lobbied Congress for stem cell research funding, directed two films from his wheelchair, and wrote two bestselling books.

He never gave up the dream of walking again. He died of cardiac arrest on October 10, 2004, at age 52.

Two years later, the first patients treated using research he had funded began regaining sensation below their injuries.
