John Brumby - New Baby Elephant at Melbourne Zoo
Melbourne Zoo's newest addition -- an 11 day old male, baby, Asian elephant, yet to be named -- went on display for the first time today and also met his older sister.
Premier John Brumby and Environment and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings visited the Trail of the Elephants to officially welcome the baby elephant and witness his first meeting with his sister, Mali.
Mr Brumby said Mali had captured the hearts and minds of all Victorians since she was born in February and her younger brother was sure to do the same.
"The Melbourne Zoo is one of Victoria's most popular tourist destinations, attracting about one million visitors each year," Mr Brumby said.
"The Zoo has just enjoyed a record year with more than 1.2 million visitors through the gates in 2009-10 and Mali was a key part of that success."
"The Zoo's newest addition is bound to be extremely popular this school holidays."
The elephant had a long and difficult birth but was delivered safely on Friday 10 September weighing 142kg. The calf and his sister have different mothers,
but were both sired by Bong Su, the Zoo's bull elephant, also the father of Taronga Zoo's second male calf, Pathi Harn.
This elephant is the first male born at Melbourne Zoo, and the fourth calf born in Australia since the regional conservation breeding program began in 2006.
Environment and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings praised the Zoo's conservation breeding program.
"The arrival of another Asian Elephant calf is a credit to the world leading expertise and dedication of the Melbourne Zoo team," Mr Jennings said.
"These efforts are all part of the regional breeding program for Asian Elephants, which are endangered in the wild.
"Melbourne Zoo is working with other zoos in the region on this conservation breeding program which is delivering significant success.
"Now Victorians can visit the Zoo and see the fruits of that success, experience the wonder of the world's wildlife, see the challenges these animals face in the wild and learn how to help."
Zoo Director Kevin Tanner said the Zoo could not have made the commitment to the conservation breeding program without the excellent facilities at the award-winning Trail of the Elephants.
"This development enabled us to import three young females from Thailand almost four years ago, to form the nucleus of our breeding herd," Mr Tanner said. We are able to provide the elephants with the very best care."
