Why Jiren Sucks [Outdated, Season 2]
Season 3 addressed many of Jiren's flaws in this video. This video will be kept up for historical purposes, but is otherwise mostly untrue as of today. You can still punish 214S, however the freeze is considerably less lenient which makes it a lot harder to buffer certain moves, and it counters way more than projectiles.
The old description:
Jiren is the worst character in DBFZ. I skimmed over some things in this video, so I'll go over them here:
Jiren's air normals are also pretty mediocre, which makes crossups awkward and difficult. Nothing stands out, there's no Goku/Cooler j.M or anything like that. His low is slow. This hurts his mix even more.
Jiren's stagger outside of 2L + 5L/5LL 2L is terrible. Man has no mix and man has no stagger past a certain point. This is also partly why his grab is so bad, you want powerful scary pressure like armored Broly normals to make the opponent not slam every button they have. Jiren has frametraps, but they aren't at the level of another character.
His counters take up all of his 214 inputs, half his entire moveset, and you can't even combo off of them without meter. 214H acts like a DP in that if used as a starter (you can only use it as a starter to begin with) the combo afterwards will only deal blue health.
The passive/aggressive/defensive style doesn't work well in a setting like DBFZ, especially when the devs weren't willing to commit on making his counters actually threatening.
Jiren has good corner carry, but no knockdowns midscreen without spending meter. His damage is also only truly noteworthy when he gets into the corner. (This is fixed in Season 3).
Jiren's 2S has a great hitbox and is easily his best normal, however much like Goku Black just having a great anti-air a good character does not make. 2H at least gives him a sideswap option as well.
236S is slow and has horrible range. You also can't combo off of it without spark or meter.
Infinity Rush is really just combo filler or a blockstring ender. It's a very boring special. They gave Gogeta a fullscreen command grab yet Jiren gets this.
5S is a poor man's beam.
j.S and j.2S are pretty decent but it's not like they're neutral dominating tools. Many characters can still blow up his attempts at controlling the screen.
Everyone can also use their Level 3s after Jiren warps in from 214S. Jiren will eat it immediately. Base Goku and GT Gokus can exploit this all day.
Jiren has all the potential in the world to be disgusting, however he's very undertuned in his current state. I imagine S3 will buff him to considerable levels. As of right now, he's horrible. All of his specials are bad and he has nothing truly noteworthy, not even noteworthy mixup.
