Jim Hunt, North Carolina’s Dynamic Leader - Told by one with a front-row seat

Speaker: Phil Baddour

Jim Hunt was the dominant figure in North Carolina government and politics from the time he was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1976 until the end of his fourth term as Governor in 2002 and beyond. Jim Hunt’s tenure was marked by major improvements in public education, higher teachers’ salaries, early childhood education, major road improvements, and relentless recruitment of high-tech industries. His constant message of economic growth through better education dominated the state’s agenda for years. Hunt’s friend since college, Phil Baddour was both observer and participant in Hunt’s political campaigns and his illustrious career of public service.

Phil Baddour has been practicing law in Goldsboro for 54 years. He was appointed by Hunt to both the NC Board of Economic Development and the NC Board of Transportation. In 1984, Phil took a four-month leave of absence from his law firm to work in the Hunt/Helms US Senate Race. He served in the North Carolina House of Representatives for eight years and for four years was the Majority Leader. As Majority Leader, Phil handled many of Hunt’s legislative initiatives.
