Best master’s thesis in nanoscience 2026: Advancing diagnostic methods

The Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI) is proud to announce the winner of this year’s prize for the best master’s thesis in nanoscience at the University of Basel. Raphael Pauli receives this award for his excellent thesis at BÜHLMANN Laboratories.
In collaboration with the team from BÜHLMANN Laboratories, he engineered sybodies — synthetic binding proteins — to improve the detection of colorectal cancer. This work not only paved the way for new diagnostic methods but also showcased the power of nanoscience in addressing applied challenges. This thesis is a perfect example of the capabilities of our nanoscience students – who are equipped with a strong foundation in physics, chemistry, and biology and are able to drive innovation at the interface of different disciplines.
