RAAF 77 Squadron End of Era Flypast.

December 11 2020 was an historic day at RAAF Base Williamtown, located just out of Newcastle, New South Wales.
Since 1987, 77 Squadron has operated the McDonnell Douglas F/A—18A/B Hornet, in the defence of Australia.
This week has seen the Squadron perform final flypasts and displays around Newcastle and surrounds.
The Hornet has been a familiar sight to many locals since the mid 80’s, and with 77 Squadron relinquishing their mounts, it will be an end of an era for RAAF Base Williamtown, as 2021 will see the Squadron transition to the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II.
On the Friday at RAAF Williamtown, ASO’s videographer was on hand to capture the final eight ‘classic’ Hornets launch before returning for their 8 ship formation flyover, that broke off into a 4 ship display, before a pairs display, and their final initial and pitch before landing.
It was certainly a fitting farewell to 77 Squadrons Hornets.
