On the eve of World War II, William Samuel Paley, with his uncanny sense for popular taste, realized that news would be a key tool in expanding the reach of his CBS radio network. By the time the war began, the CBS news service was one of the most powerful in the United States, and Paley himself was assigned to serve as director of radio operations of the psychological warfare branch at Allied Force Headquarters.
“Bill Paley erected two towers of power: one for entertainment and one for news. And he decreed that there would be no bridge between them,” said Don Hewitt, creator of 60 Minutes, one of the best TV shows of all time, on CBS since 1968, about Paley.
Until William Paley, whose grandfather owned a sawmill near Kyiv, radio broadcasting was viewed exclusively as the broadcast equivalent of newspapers. Everything changed in 1927 when Paley's father, the owner of a cigar company, bought a small radio network of 16 stations called the Columbia Phonographic Broadcasting System.
Paley directed the power of the radio network to advertising his father's cigar business and doubled sales in a year. Assessing the potential of radio as a powerful advertising medium, he began to expand the radio network, attracting scattered radio stations to it on a franchise basis.
The businessman was the first to realize that advertisers are key partners for the media, but for advertisements to be effective, he simultaneously took care of the quality of the aired on CBS content, first on radio, and eventually on television. Thanks to him, Frank Sinatra began to sound on the radio, and later a huge number of popular shows were released on the CBS channel.
William Paley is recognized as the pioneer of broadcasting in the United States, setting the basic standards by which the entire industry still operates today, wrote Boris Lozhkin on Facebook.
