"Beethoven: Complete Violin Sonatas Volume 1" is the first of two volumes containing all ten of the violin sonatas composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Simply put, these performances are brilliant in every way. In these recordings from 1979 and 1980, Austrian pianist Ingrid Haebler and Polish violinist Henryk Szeryng combine to play each of Beethoven's Violin Sonatas Nos. 1-5 with incomparable artistry. Their musicianship exudes tremendous warmth and vitality, and the obviously special chemistry between them is in no way diminished by the slightly thin tonal quality of Szeryng's violin. Both of Beethoven's violin romances, performed by Szeryng and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under the baton of conductor Bernard Haitink, also appear in this volume, and are no less beautifully performed. This is one of the finest recordings of Beethoven's violin sonatas available. Most highly recommended.

I first encountered Szeryng in a performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto and was "bitten". This is a great collaboration with Haebler and very enjoyable. Szeryng's violin just sings!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beethoven's Early Sonatas For Piano And Violin

...Szeryng and Haebler offer wonderful renditions of this music. The piano and the violin are balanced and play as equals, as Beethoven intended, with neither instrument trying to overshadow the other. Szeryng plays with a rich tone that comes through beautifully in the "Spring" sonata. The "Spring" is taken at a slower tempo than is sometimes the case. The recordings on this compilation date from 1978 and the CD sells at a reasonable price.

This disc, and its companion disc of the later five sonatas, constitute an excellent compilation of Beethoven's piano and violin music. They are an outstanding way for the listener to become acquainted with these works.

I will discuss the entire set.Haebler and Szeryng play Beethoven as well as they play Mozart: incomparably. They play as full partners and retreat from none of Beethoven's demands. They can play with with great power and virtuosity (e.g #9); calmness (lyrical reflectivenes in #s 5,6,and #10), youthful elan and high spirits (#1-3 and 8), tragic depth in #s 1,4, 7, 10; passion in #9. They are much better recorded than Grumiaux/Haskil, a bit more energized than Grumiuax/Arrau in their excellent half dozen (see my review), more tonally attractive than Kremer, less muted than Kempff (c.f his great Goldbergs and Mozart pc #24 et al). They bring great joy, capturing the myriad moods of Beethoven at full strength.

I am a huge fan of Henryk Szeryng and have never heard an unsatisfactory performance by him. This 2-CD set is a bargain for fans of both Beethoven and Szeryng.
