Hey, Wealthy Expat. I'm here on vacation, but I recently heard about Colombia's new fat tax. An effective 10% tax on all foods that make you fat, that make you overweight, that make you sick, that Americans, that Canadians are in love with. Colombia wants to battle diabetes, heart disease, noncommunicable diseases, which actually kill more than 70% of the population. You might think, oh, Colombia. That's where people get trafficked. That's where people get kidnapped. That's where people die or they get killed because of drug trafficking or other sources.

Well, no. More than half the population dies of noncommunicable diseases that are preventable, and now the government is pushing to prevent those diseases by adding a 10% tax on all salty foods, sugary foods, fatty foods, and ready to eat foods like chips, candy, gummy worms, things like these. The tax will increase to 15% next year, and then it'll increase to 20%, and who knows where it's going. Maybe it goes up to 50%.

They're also adding labels to all food that makes you fat and unhealthy. It will have a big white label on the front. Maybe if you've been to Mexico or Peru or Ecuador, you'll see that in front of, let's say, a granola bar that's packed with sugar. It will say, "This food makes you fat. Please eat with moderation." Just the same as it shows with tobacco, with alcohol, with any of these other toxic substances that we eat or drink in moderation. Now it will show it for fatty foods.

This is absolutely breakthrough. Nobody in the mainstream media is talking about this because they want you to be fat. They want you to be a big slob so that you listen to what the government says, and then the World Health Organization, which had everybody get the thing in their arm, is then going to tell you how you can lose that weight, lose the weight, get healthier, just buy their pills. Just buy the big pharma medications so that you get better. Because the government is making you fat because they're not protecting you. Obviously humans, we crave sugar, we crave fat, and Colombia knows that. Heart disease is increasing, obesity is increasing.

Have you been to Colombia? You see that women are getting chunkier and chunkier over time, and men are also getting chunkier, so the government is tackling this proactively while the United States is encouraging you to be fat. These western countries are pushing body positivity.

And that's the beauty of finding governments and finding countries that actually care about you. I talk about countries here that build good roads so your car doesn't lose a tire every couple of days. That build good health systems. That care about the population, they want the population to be healthy because we can't stop ourselves from wanting that sugar. Yes, you can have willpower, but it comes down to these regulations like adding a fat tax, literally a fat tax on these foods in order to keep the population healthy.

Jeff Bezos moved out of Washington State because he was added on a wealth tax, a new capital gains tax, new income taxes coming to Washington State.
Jeff Bezos said, "I'm a multi-billionaire that creates this massive company that everybody loves. I'm leaving this place. I'm going to Miami where they don't tax my income, or they tax at a lower rate."

And that's not the tax that we should be implementing. We shouldn't be taxing billionaires. People that create value. We should be taxing things that create destruction, that make you sick. So I applaud Colombia for doing this. I hope that more and more Latin American countries adopt this model, and I hope the United States, although they won't, I hope at some point they adopt this model. If you as an American or as a Westerner, if you look at yourself, you're overweight, go to these countries that care about you.

And a small note for one of the countries that holds a very special place in my heart, Serbia. Serbia also has tight controls on all the food that gets produced, all the food that gets cooked, and if you go to Serbia, you will see a drastic increase in food quality, food taste, food freshness, farm to table, literally not ultra processed. Whatever junk you're eating in the United States, go to these countries that actually have fresh food.
