Artist Tips: Making Original Characters

Have you ever tried to draw an original character, only to find yourself stuck with a bad case of artist's block? Looking for inspiration? Well look no further! Try this exercise in order to come up with brand new, totally unique characters immediately!

By using dice, a coin, or anything you can play by chance, you can assign traits to an original character that you otherwise wouldn't have thought of. Not only will this help you create new and exciting illustrations, but it will also allow you to push your art further and expand you style in ways never thought possible.

For my drawings, I break each dice roll into 5 categories: Species, Age, Gender, Genre, and Style. And because a die has 6 sides, each category then has 6 individual traits.

So each roll of the dice goes as follows:
SPECIES:
1. Human
2. Alien
3. Robot
4. Demon
6. Angel

AGE:
1. Child
2. Teenager
3. Adult
4. Middle-Aged
5. Senior
6. Undead

GENDER:
1. Male
2. Female
3. Non-Binary
4. Male
5. Female
6. Non-Binary

GENRE:
1. Fantasy
2. Futuristic
3. Apocalyptic
4. Horror
5. Western
6. Modern

STYLE:
1. Pencil shading
2. Anime
3. Black ink
4. Realistic
5. Superhero
6. Comic Book

The best part about this exercise is that you can change up any of these traits and truly make it your own! Add more, use less, add different styles or poses. You can even add emotions. The possibilities are endless so whenever you feel uninspired to create, try this drawing trick today!
