Both Democrats and Republicans must understand the importance of 'loser's consent' in elections

Both sides of the political divide in America must understand that loser’s consent holds the line between order and chaos when it comes to democracy, according to Sky News host Chris Kenny.

President Donald Trump was critised by both Democrats and Republicans for suggesting November's presidential election should be delayed as the country grapples with COVID-19.

Mr Kenny said while President Trump's comments were incendiary, the Democrats have spent the last four years doing everything they can "to overturn, defeat and delegitimize the election result".

Trump has never received the crucial loser's consent from the Democrats," Mr Kenny said.

"If he loses the election many of his supporters will be believe the political establishment they elected him to sort out, has unfairly chewed him up and spat him out.

"The reaction could be divisive.

"If the Democrats, whether it is Joe Biden or a replacement, if the Democrats lose, well we've seen over the past three and half years how well they react to defeat, so you can expect fireworks with groups like Antifa at the fore.

"The democratic challenge for the US is great, and everyone needs to understand the important of loser's consent – it holds the line between order and chaos, between democracy and force."
