Types of Rescue | Rescue Checklist (Episode 6)

Not all rescues are the same and your rescue plan must reflect that.

In this video, Miles breaks down the different types of rescue that may be required when working at height or in confined spaces, and why understanding these differences is critical to effective rescue planning.

The starting point is simple:

The best rescue is the one you never have to do.

From there, the video explains how rescue capability should be layered, from the simplest option through to specialist interventions.

Rescue types covered include:

Self-rescue:
Can the worker get themselves to safety without assistance?
- Descending their own lines
- Using an escape set in a confined space
- Controlled descent via a constant rate descender

Remote rescue:
Can the casualty be recovered without direct contact?
- Lowering via a pre-rigged rescue system
- Operating devices such as a Milan descender
- Winch or fall arrester recovery in confined spaces

Indirect rescue:
Can rescuers remain protected while making a casualty connection?
- Working from behind collective protection or restraint
- Using reach poles to connect the casualty
- Transferring the casualty onto a separate rescue system

Direct rescue:
When direct contact is required:
- Providing life-saving first aid
- Conducting a snatch rescue
- Moving the casualty onto a new system

Specialist rescue considerations:
Some situations require additional capability, including:
- Stretcher-based evacuations
- Complex confined space recoveries
- Mechanical advantage systems to reduce manual handling

Confined space rescue considerations are also covered, including:
- Differences between low, medium, and high-risk entries
- The impact of space classification on rescue complexity
- Why hauling casualties is physically demanding
- The need for mechanical advantage systems such as inline or piggyback inchworm setups

Key principles reinforced:
- Rescue capability must match every position you place a worker in
- Any lift introduces work at height considerations
- Twin systems may be required depending on casualty movement
- Rescue planning must be realistic, practiced, and achievable
