Tips for Tough Decisions | Don Keeler | TEDxSchuleSchlossSalem

Every day you make hundreds of decisions, from when to wake up to whether you blow off that “must do” task until tomorrow…or whenever! Most decisions do not really register very high on your “Impact Meter,” but some have consequences that can alter your life irrevocably. Don likens decisions to a bank account—good decisions are deposits, bad ones withdrawals, and the really bad ones can leave you bankrupt.

Are there any rules that can help you face and make tough decisions? Decision-making—personally or professionally—is a learned skill, but it is grounded on sound moral and ethical principles, too. And you need the right teachers. Don draws on life-lessons learned from his parents, the Navy, friends and mentors, and the “School of Hard Knocks.” There is no sugar-coating in this talk; Don takes aim at conventional wisdom and the way society views personal responsibility and accountability today versus when he grew up.

Don Keeler is a mathematics tutor and substitute teacher at Schule Schloss Salem in Überlingen, Germany.

He grew up in the United States near Philadelphia, PA. After graduating from the US Naval Academy, he served 12 years in flying and staff positions. His last tour of duty was in London, where he met and married Karin, his wife of 34 years.

After leaving the Navy Don flew emergency medical airlift missions and business aircraft in Dallas, Texas. In Boston he worked at his church’s worldwide headquarters, was a software project manager, and a full-time, stay-at-home Dad in between several recalls to military active duty.

In 2000 Don, Karin, Ben and Nate moved to Germany, where Don worked at the Headquarters of the US European Command in Stuttgart. A fully accredited Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Don investigated cases for the Department of Defense throughout Europe. He retired in 2008 and found new outlets for his many interests, including horseback riding, scuba diving, paragliding, sailing…and teaching mathematics.
