Scientists rank atmospheric rivers, West Coast rainmakers

Capable of creating more than $1 billion in damage, atmospheric rivers are both beneficial and harmful to California's water supply.

While the weather systems are responsible for 30% to nearly half of the annual rainfall in California, flooding in late 1996 and the Oroville Dam spillway breach of February 2017 speak to their destructive power.

Now, scientists have a way to categorize atmospheric rivers by their replenishing capacities and dangerous effects alike.
