The Carrington Event, a massive solar storm that occurred in September 1859, is the largest geomagnetic storm ever recorded. It was caused by a large coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun, which caused strong auroras, disrupted telegraph systems, and even sparked some telegraph stations.
