Can I Ski After a Knee Replacement? | Obinna O. Adigweme, M.D.

According to Obinna O. Adigweme, M.D., an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive and computer-assisted hip and knee surgeries at Orlando Orthopaedic Center, most surgeons will recommend that you limit high-impact sports such as long-distance running or skiing after your knee replacement.

High-impact activity can wear down the components in your new knee, and knee replacement can wear out faster the more stress you put on it. However, innovations in both knee surgery and the components making up the artificial knee have increased their durability and strength, allowing patients to put a little more stress on the knee.

One study followed patients who performed high-level skiing for up to seven years after their knee replacement surgery. The study found no decrease in the longevity of the knee replacement. Dr. Adigweme says that skiing after surgery is possible, but you should ask your surgeon beforehand.
