Bringing a U.S.-built yacht into China is not as simple as sailing it across the ocean.

You need to clear Chinese customs, and that means following some key steps.

First, import duties and taxes apply.

China charges a high import duty on yachts, plus Value-Added Tax (VAT) and sometimes a consumption tax.

These can make the final price much higher than the original cost.

Second, paperwork is required.

The importer must provide documents like the bill of sale, certificate of origin, invoice, and proof that the yacht meets Chinese safety and environmental standards.

Without these papers, customs will not release the yacht.

Third, inspection is a must.

Chinese customs officers will check the yacht’s size, engines, and equipment to make sure everything matches the documents.

They may also inspect for pollution control and safety compliance.

Finally, the yacht must be officially registered in China before it can be used there.

This registration gives the owner legal rights to sail in Chinese waters.

In simple words: to import a U.S.-built yacht into China, you need to pay import duty, VAT, and taxes, show full documents, pass customs inspection, and register the yacht locally.
