Helping children in emergencies

In situations of emergency, children are among the most affected population groups. Every day, thousands of children are separated from their families and left alone without protection. They are also exposed to attacks, sexual exploitation, forced labour and early marriage, abused and recruitment by armed groups, among other things. Many are deprived from their most basic needs, such as shelter, health care, food or access to education.

Whether in the nutrition and food assistance sector, water, sanitation, hygiene, education, health care or medical and psycho-social support and protection, the European Commission ensures that children's needs are taking into account in planning and delivering aid. In 2014, the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO) dedicated approximately 14% of its budget to child-focused relief organisations.
