Making People Think They Are LEVITATING!

We asked people to stand on a beach towel in order to be levitated far into the air... up and up and onto the Huntington Beach Pier. Little did they know, everyone around them was in on it and that they were only "levitating" ONE INCH off the ground before they "fell!" It's very important to understand that the "victims" DID NOT KNOW ABOUT or hear THE GUYS LIFTING THEM OR THE PLATFORM THEY STOOD ON that was buried in the sand. Also, Jack Vale and Rich Ferguson LOWERED themselves and spoke into the ground saying such things as, "You are 15 feet in the air now!" In the victims minds, they were levitating and thought they were falling 5-40 feet! Why do people still believe they are levitation although they are still "standing" on a towel in "mid air?" Simple, the mental illusion is that strong. Several misled senses as well as a strong mental image overwhelm the senses. The unsteadiness of the balance and the fact they are positive they are in the air remove any focus and logic in the moment. They could care less that their feet are still touching a towel. Additionally, the towel is on top of reveal inches of sand that is falling away before the "towel" is upon a spongy material on the hidden platform. So for those that ask, it's easy to thinking about it logically when it's not happening to you... However, to the subjects this is quite a real experience. Furthermore, we did this to each other during practice before hitting the beach and even KNOWING that we were standing on a board and the people to our sides were lowering, it felt real enough! For those that might assume people are stupid are missing the many, many layers to this mental illusion. I certainly hope this little insight helps.
