French heavyweight Teddy Riner's quest for a record-tying third consecutive Olympic gold medal in judo ended when losing to ROC athlete Tamerlan Bashaev, world number 1, in the quarterfinals at Tokyo 2020. Nevertheless, Riner managed to win another gold with team France that became the first judo mixed team gold medallist after beating host nation Japan 4-1 at the Nippon Budokan.
