Prison Employees Honored for Off Duty Heroics

Not all heroes wear capes. Many of them wear TDOC badges and walk among us every day.

What happened? Earlier this month, while BCCX Corporal Steve Brown and his wife, Correctional Counselor Jessica Brown, were traveling through Crossville, they witnessed a motorist in need of assistance. The vehicle had rolled out into the road, blocking both lanes. The Browns pulled over and went to offer assistance, assuming the car was having mechanical issues.

However, as they approached the vehicle, the saw an elderly woman in the passenger seat panicking as the driver lay slumped over. Corporal Brown immediately realized this was a medical emergency. He put the car in park, pulled the driver from the vehicle, and began administering chest compressions while Mrs. Brown called 9-1-1 and worked to calm the elderly woman. Cpl. Brown continued chest compressions until EMS arrived on scene.

It was determined the man was in cardiac arrest and first responders had to use an AED to revive the man and stabilize him so he could be transported.

After EMS left with the man, who was the son of the elderly passenger, the Browns wanted to make sure the woman was ok. After talking with her and contacting another family member, it was determined it would be best for her to get to the hospital. The Browns, without a second thought, agreed to get her to the hospital.

What they are saying: “I knew it was serious and I knew what we had to do to help this man," said Cpl. Brown. "I lost my dad to a heart attack. I couldn't be there for him but I was there for this man and I knew I was going to do all I could to help him."

Being honored: In recognition of their heroic and selfless efforts, Interim Commissioner Lisa Helton presented the Browns with the Commissioner's Coin of Excellence.
