Clean energy works better when it can be stored

Solar generation is an important step. Battery storage helps make that clean electricity more flexible, resilient, and useful.

At Duke Farms, battery storage allows excess solar energy generated during the day to be used later, including after sunset. That means more clean energy can stay on site and support campus operations when it is needed most.

This is a key part of our Natural Systems Energy Plan: not only generating renewable electricity, but managing it thoughtfully across a complex campus.

For institutions working toward sustainability goals, the lesson is clear. Clean energy planning is not just about adding technology. It is about sequencing systems — generation, storage, electrification, and operations — so each piece strengthens the next.
