Demolition drive at Chandola Pond in Ahmedabad enters its second phase

Authorities resumed a large-scale demolition drive near Chandola Pond in Ahmedabad on Monday morning as part of Chandola Demolition Drive 2.0.

The operation, which began at 8 am, is focused on clearing thousands of illegal hutments in the vicinity of the lake.

Joint Commissioner of Police Sharad Singhal said that the second phase of the drive aims to dismantle around 8,000 unauthorised structures.

"The Chandola 1.0 operation had a targeted approach to remove illegal Bangladeshis and land mafia... Under Chandola 2.0 operation, 50 corporation teams, police officials and various rescue teams are working together to remove 8,000 illegal hutments near Chandola lake,” he said.

The demolition is being carried out jointly by over 50 teams from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), backed by a significant police presence and emergency services on standby.

The authorities say the drive is part of a broader urban development and anti-encroachment initiative.
