Anjali Srinivasan, 35th Rakow Commission Recipient
The Corning Museum of Glass (CMoG) has named Boston and Indian -based artist Anjali Srinivasan (b. 1978, India) the recipient of the 2020 Rakow Commission. The prestigious award supports the creation of a new work of art in glass by an artist who is not yet represented in CMoG’s collection. Anjali’s work is now on view in the Contemporary Art + Design Galleries.
Anjali Srinivasan’s work draws on her research of sheesh mahal, or mirror palaces, awe-inspiring Mughal-era constructions of glittering glass mosaics. Hear the ways she’s giving this centuries-old craft new life in her work for the Museum. साँस {Saans} the eyes of the skin سانس is a glittering, interactive mirrored wall that senses viewers and rewards their attention by slowly beginning to breathe back at them.
“So, for the artist, it’s the idea of what does it take to make change? How big do you have to be to make change? The answer that this piece is trying to give you is that you don’t have to be big at all, that the change itself doesn’t have to be big— it can be whatever you can do—and that your change will become amplified when you work together, when you are part of something bigger. And that’s a really important message.”
- Susie J Silbert, Curator of Postwar and Contemporary Glass at The Corning Museum of Glass.
