Women Farmers Adapting to Climate Change in Ethiopia

Farmer Qoro Sultan leads a group of more than 30 women in Dire Lafto village in Ethiopia, where they work together on different farming approaches to help cope with and adapt to climate change and global warming.

“The rains don’t fall here when they used to, so it is hard for us to plan”, she says.

‘Climate-smart’ agricultural techniques that allow group members to get the most out of limited water supplies are promoted. The group have also invested collectively in a diesel water pump to allow them to channel water from the nearby lake to small vegetable gardens that they each have created. Qoro no longer relies on just corn and teff (local cereal) to feed her family, as she also grows onions, beetroot, cabbage and other produce in her vegetable plot.
