Hey Nintendo, watch TASBot beat SMB like a piano roll in 4:57 from power-on on original hardware

TASBot plays SMB RTA viable any% (no L+R) in 4:57.56 from power-on by Maru
TASBot plays Super Mario Bros. (SMB1 on the NES) by pressing a human viable series of buttons in order arranged and provided by Maru while dwangoAC explains how TASBot is really just a controller that can precisely push buttons just like a piano roll playing back a prerecorded song in a player piano.

The run in this video shows gameplay using only original, unmodified hardware. This is my personal NES from my childhood along with an original copy of Super Mario Bros. 1. There are no devices that interfere with the normal operation of the game or console and the video path is direct from the console into a CRT TV and from there into a composite video capture device. TASBot, when connected to an unmodified controller port, responds with exactly the same responses as a human holding a controller. This run adheres strictly to only pressing button combinations that a human can perform meaning left and right are never pressed at the same time making this run human Real Time Attack (RTA) viable.

This video demonstrates that the process of console verification does not involve any modifications to hardware in any way, does not involve any reverse engineering in and of itself, and does not do anything that involves encryption in any way due to the nature of original NES hardware.

In summary, this video demonstrates gameplay that is completely legitimate in every way and does not contain any form of cheats, modifications, or any other deviations from normal gameplay. A human on perfect form would be able to reproduce what TASBot does but such a feat would require substantial skill, reflexes, luck, and memorization (current human efforts are by convention timed from the start of the game rather than power-on; it should be noted that this TAS *is* faster than the fastest recorded efforts). TASBot really has only one advantage: consistency. The hope of this video is that Nintendo as a company sees this demonstration for the valid gameplay it is now and into the future.

Update: One note about this video - at the time it was posted Nintendo had a Creator's program that was far more restrictive of content than it is now. It is unlikely that this video influenced their decision to abandon the program but either way the goals hoped for were achieved. It is now possible to post Nintendo content that has been console verified (i.e. played back by TASBot) and not receive a content ID match or any other action.
