Chile: Police fire water canons at anti-government protesters in Santiago

Police drenched anti-government protesters with water cannons, in Santiago on Tuesday, as people cycled through the city marking the first anniversary of the social uprising.

Police fired water cannons at protesters, who hurled projectiles at officers, with traffic also seen being blocked.

On Sunday Chileans voted in support of changing the dictatorship-era constitution. The body in charge of drafting the new constitution members will be elected by popular vote on April 11 of next year.

The massive demonstrations in Chile were triggered by a metro fare hike which was later withdrawn. But the protests continued with demands to address the rising cost of living, pension reform and alleged abuse of power by police.
