After Aurangzeb's accession to the Mughal throne in 1659 he sent Shaista Khan as viceroy of the Deccan with a large army to enforce the treaty the Mughals had signed with the Adilshahi of Bijapur Through the treaty the Adilshahi had ceded territory that it had previously captured from the Ahmadnagar Sultanate to the Mughals
However the territory was also fiercely contested by Maratha ruler chhatrapati Shivaji maharaja who had acquired a reputation after his killing of Adilshahi general Afzal Khan in 1659 In January 1660
Shaista Khan arrived at Aurangabad and quickly advanced seizing Pune the centre of chatrapati Shivaji's realm He also captured the fort of Chakan and Kalyan and north Konkan after heavy fighting with the Maratha
The Maratha were banned from entering the city of Pune and Mughal distance from the locals turned out to be an error On the evening of 5 April 1663 a wedding party had obtained special permission for holding a procession Shivaji and many of his nearly 400 men disguised as the bridegroom's procession members entered Pune Others entered in small parties dressed as labourers and soldiers of Maratha generals serving under Shaista Khan After midnight they raided the Nawab's compound and then entered the palace in an attempt to assassinate him

Shaista Khan was unaware and unprepared The Marathas broke into the courtyard of the palace and slaughtered the palace guards The Nawab lost three fingers in a skirmish with Shivaji while his son was killed in an encounter with the Marathas in the palace courtyard Taking advantage of the confusion and darkness the Marathas escaped the palace and Pune despite the widespread camping of Mughal forces Shocked by the sudden and bold attack in the city Aurangzeb angrily transferred Shaista Khan to Bengal even refusing to give him an interview at the time of transfer as was the custom
आज हम मराठा इतिहास के नायक छत्रपति शिवाजी महाराज की सर्जिकल स्ट्राइक के बारे मे जानेंगे
औरंगजेब 1659 में अपनी दूसरी ताजपोशी के बाद अपने मामा शाइस्ता खाँ को दक्षिण का वायसराय नियुक्त करता है जिसका प्रमुख काम होता है छत्रपति शिवाजी महाराज को हराना

शाइस्ता ख़ान पुणे और चाकन के युद्ध के बाद 1661-63 में शिवाजी के विरुद्ध काफी सेनाएं भेजता है जिनमें से कुछ को #शेर_शिवाजी राजे पछाड़ देते है और कुछ शिवाजी के सरदारों को हरा देती हैं

इस सारे युद्ध अभ्यान में शिवाजी के आधे से ज्यादा राज्य को काफी नुकसान पहुँचता है अब शिवाजी महाराज एक ऐसे तरीके से शाइस्तां ख़ान को सबक सिखाने की सोचते है जिससे पूरे भारत में उनकी धूम मच जाती है।

छत्रपति शिवाजी 5 अप्रैल 1663 की रात को शाइस्तां खाँ के सैनिक डेरे पर उसके कमरे के बिलकुल पास जाकर उस पर हमला कर देते है जिससे डर कर ख़ान दक्षिण छोड़कर भाग जाता है आज की भाषा में शिवाजी के इस हमले को सर्जीकल स्ट्राइक कह दे तो कोई अतिकथनी नही होगी।
