Why Did Spain Hide These Files for 45 Years?
On February 23rd, 1981, a man with a pistol walked into the Spanish parliament and took the entire government hostage. For eighteen hours, nobody knew if democracy would survive.
For 45 years, the official story was simple: a rogue colonel tried a coup, the King stopped him, end of story. But in February 2026, Spain declassified hundreds of secret files — and what they reveal is far more complicated than the version anyone was told.
The intelligence services were compromised. The plotters had a plan for a second coup. Phone calls were made between parliament and the Royal Palace that have never been explained. And the man celebrated as the hero of that night now lives in exile in Abu Dhabi, six thousand kilometres from the democracy he saved.
This is the story of the night Spanish democracy almost died — and why the files that explain it were hidden for nearly half a century.
