Combat in Whip snakes - Tolfa Hills, Italy
Snake Combat - male Western Whip Snakes (Hierophis viridiflavus) entwined in combat over breeding privileges. Males of this species are able to track both male and female pheromone trails during the breeding season. From the Tolfa hills north of Rome, Italy. I was out birding when we spotted the snakes in the middle of the road. Shortly before we had seen a Short-toed snake Eagle (Circaetus gallicus) soaring across the valley. The snakes fighting out in the open would make easy prey, and it was good to see the snakes eventually finesse their way into the grass.
Ritualistic combat behavior in snake species is uncommon but present in several genera, indicating a convergent evolution that gives a reproductive advantage. Typically, females have a short or irregular breeding period, males are larger than females and have the ability to track males of the same species. For background ecology on this species, there is an excellent field study conducted over several years in the Tolfa hills by Capula M., et al (1997) HERPETOZOA 10: 65 -79. For pheromone trailing in males see Fornasiero, S. et al. (2007) Amphibia-Reptilia 28: 555-559.

Although my nature channel Birding Visions focuses on birds, a number of the videos contain footage of reptiles and amphibians. This is not too surprising since I have been out herping from the age of 5, with the dream of becoming a research herpetologist or museum curator. Anyway, to make a long story short, I decided to start a Reptiles and Amphibians playlist. Several videos with a focus on herps will be added in 2020-21. I have also added timestamps to the herp shots in the "bird" videos included in the playlist.
Welcome to BIRDING VISIONS – portraits and sound recordings of birds and their habitats, sharing the sublime beauty of nature. These wildlife videos are both documentary and impressions of an experience. I hope you get a sense of being there: from the Rock Wren of remote Willis Creek Slot Canyon, Utah, singing Whinchat in the coastal heathland of Norway, a band of Arabian Babblers in the desert sands of Israel, to soaring Kites over Kyoto, Japan.
The playlists are organized by geographical region and topic (singing birds, shorebirds, etc). The 200+ videos are from many different places across the globe, with a focus on birds of North America and the Western Palearctic, including Europe, Israel and Morocco. This is a non-monetized no-ads channel. Contact clive.bramham@gmail.com for licensing of footage and other enquiries.
