Xpeng P7 Test Drive - 小鹏P7试驾 (Full Impressions in Description)

The aesthetic beauty of a car is a matter of taste, so with regards to how it looks, I won't say much more than I think that the P7 looks nice on the road. The rest of the impressions are about the experience at the shop and the test drive itself. This isn't a review of the car, merely first impressions. I'd need more than 5 minutes behind the wheel to do a proper review obviously.

The interior of the car felt cheap and plasticky. It didn't give a luxurious vibe, but instead more of a mid tier commuter car vibe. It does the job, but it isn't flashy imo. The design of the door handles was also weird, especially after testing the NIO. The NIO handles intuitively made sense to me in how you press to get them to pop open and allow you to open the door. You'll see I struggled a bit in the video with the door handle. The salesman said it's better to pop handles open with the app or key fob, and I believe him. You'll also see the placement of the wireless phone charger is not ideal. Of course you shouldn't be looking at your phone while driving, but in the real world people do look at their phones sometimes, so I don't think putting it in a somewhat awkward position for the driver to reach for is a great idea.

Driving the car was fine. Nothing stood out about the ride. It was smooth and quiet and what you can expect from a modern car. It didn't have a ton of giddyup and go, but it's probably enough for most situations. I don't think most drivers will feel like they are lacking the power needed to overtake someone, but it's definitely not gonna jump off the line like the NIO or Tesla would. As the salesman said, the big advantage is the 500+km range per charge.

The robot assistant was the biggest weakness in my limited time with the car. It very often either misunderstood and did the wrong thing, or simply said that it didn't understand, and did nothing. That wasn't with me speaking, that was with a native Chinese speaker who presumably would know all of the proper voice commands since he works with the car everyday.

The shopping experience was ok. They weren't going all out with the lifestyle brand identity like NIO, but it was a comfortable space to view the car and shop in. They provided drinks and snacks and it was a relaxed, low pressure environment.

Wait time on most cars was 4-6 weeks.

Overall first impressions are that the car offers a pretty basic experience. Nothing about it is spectacular, but it's a nice enough middle class consumer EV for the Chinese market. Not sure why you'd buy it over a Tesla Model 3 since the price is essentially the same, but their cheaper G3 or future cheaper sedan might be promising as a mid tier option at a good price.
