Since the very beginning and until the 19th century it had been used as a natural defense as it runs from the south of the fortress.
These days river is used for other purposes, though it’s still a main drinking water supply at some point. Moreover , 8 hydroelectric stations are operating on the bank of the river. Most importantly, when it comes to winter and river is frozen, Muscovites like to skate around there, no matter of season they also like to enjoy river cruise. And it’s fairytale-like.
