Most women use "period" and "cycle" to mean the same thing.
They are not.
Your period is the 5 to 7 days of bleeding. Your cycle is the full 24 to 38 days from the first day of bleeding to the day before the next one starts.

The period is just one part of the cycle. And while it marks the end of the previous cycle, it also signals the start of the new one.

Once you know the difference, your body starts to make a lot more sense.
